2018 Accommodation Industry Hall of Fame

The 2018 inductee into the Accommodation Industry Hall of Fame is Chief Operating Officer of the Seashells Hospitality Group, Mr Gareth Thomas.

Gareth’s hospitality career began back in 1982 at the Kings Ambassador Hotel as a management trainee. Since then he has accumulated more than 36 years’ experience in hotels and resorts and has directly managed four and five star properties since 1991.

Gareth’s extensive hospitality and tourism experience is unquestioned but it is his balanced, calm approach that has arguably been his most defining characteristic. His personality and rich experience has allowed him to add significant value to a range of businesses across Australia and the world.

His career highlights include;

  • Overseeing the pre-opening and opening of the five-star Reef Hotel Casino in Cairns;
  • Running the Chifley on Flemington in Melbourne; and
  • General Manager work in the UK, China, Cairns, Brisbane and Melbourne.

Gareth returned to his home town Perth in 2000 to be General Manager of the five-star Rendezvous Observation City through to 2004. During his time with Rendezvous, Gareth was seconded to Shanghai, China, where he was intimately involved in the rebranding and re-launch of the 4-Star Rendezvous Merry Hotel as General Manager.

Before joining Seashells Hospitality Group Gareth worked with the Broadwater Hospitality Group as a Property General Manager, Area Manager and finally Group General Manager, overseeing all WA property assets.

In 2010, Gareth left Seashells briefly before returning in 2011 to continue with Seashells as Group General Manager and COO.

Gareth oversees all aspects of the management and operations of Seashells’ five luxury properties located from Broome to Yallingup along the WA coast.

Gareth has a Graduate Certificate in Business Administration from Southern Cross University, has sat on numerous industry panels and boards and has received multiple awards in properties under his leadership.

The AHA(WA) is delighted to have Gareth join an esteemed list of Hall of Fame winners who have made an incredible contribution to Western Australia’s hotel and hospitality industry.
