COVID Safety Plan

The WA Government has implemented a staged easing of COVID-19 restrictions based on the best of health advice, effective from 18 May, 2020.

Food businesses including cafes, fast food establishments, restaurants, pubs, clubs, hotels, roadhouses, taverns and casino will be allowed to re-open subject to mandatory conditions such as only serving alcohol ancillary to a meal and ensuring alcohol is only consumed at a table (not counter service, or bar service).

The Hospitality Industry must comply with these requirements so that we may move forward to Phase 3 and a closer return to normality.

All food businesses are required to mitigate the risks of COVID-19. The requirements for the safe operation of your premises are outlined below:

  • maintain a strict limit of a minimum of four square metres (4sqm) per person
  • ensure a maximum of 20 dine-in patrons per venue (excluding staff)
  • maintain hygiene and frequent cleaning
  • self-complete a COVID Safety Plan (available below) prior to re-opening (or expanding beyond ‘takeaway only’) and display a COVID Safety Plan Certificate
  • ensure staff have completed the AHA Hospitality & Tourism COVID-19 Hygiene Course before returning to work
  • maintain attendance records of patrons for the purposes of contact tracing (not including takeaway services)
  • carefully manage waiting areas to ensure social distancing
  • only serve alcohol ancillary to a meal
  • ensure alcohol is only consumed at a table (not counter service, or bar service).
  • All businesses need to do their part to comply with these requirements and help mitigate the risks of COVID-19.

COVID Safety Plans are an important part of ensuring that re-opening businesses does not increase the risk of spreading COVID-19. Failure to complete a COVID Safety Plan may mean your business is putting the community at risk. Authorised officers under the Emergency Management Act have the power to close premises and businesses that put the community at risk in this way.

AHA Hospitality and Tourism COVID-19 Hygiene Training

A mandatory AHA Hospitality and Tourism COVID-19 hygiene training program has been launched to prepare the hospitality industry for a return to business. This specialised training course will need to be successfully completed by every staff member employed at a hospitality venue — with businesses strictly only able to reopen when the requirements are met.

The WA Government has backed the WA hospitality industry, its businesses and workers by funding the AHA Hospitality & Tourism COVID-19 Hygiene Course to ensure access to a free COVID-19 hygiene awareness training course for all.

The course covers:

AHA COVID-19 Hygiene Training

  • understanding COVID-19 and venue restrictions?
  • reporting personal health issues?
  • maintaining personal and work environment hygiene practices
  • reducing cross contamination through procedures?
  • effective cleaning and sanitising practices?

The course draws on State and Federal health directions regarding COVID-19.

The course is two-tiered, with all staff required to successfully complete the first component, and managers and supervisors required to complete the second, more advanced aspect.

Businesses will also have to display signage that the venue is compliant with all conditions.?

Existing social distancing regulations for hospitality businesses remain in place, with any future easing of restrictions dependent on expert health advice.

Western Australia’s 70,000 hospitality workers are encouraged to study the Tier 1 course material and complete the assessment.
