2027 AHA & Little Creatures WA’s Best Steak Sandwich competition
For two decades, the AHA’s WA’s Best Steak Sandwich competition has been putting a true pub classic to the test. In 2027, the search returns for the 20th year.
Venues across Western Australia will go head to head in two categories — Perth Metro and WA Regional — with the state’s steak sandwich lovers getting their say along the way. It’s time to put WA’s steak sandwich fangability to the test.
Whether you have a steak sandwich you reckon can beat the rest, or you simply love dining out on a good steak sandwich, there’s a place for you in the competition.
The competition will culminate in live cook-offs at the 2027 AHA Hospitality Expo at Crown Perth on 4 and 5 May 2027.

Got WA's best steak sandwich — or reckon you could create one?
If your venue has a steak sandwich your customers keep coming back for, this is your chance to put it to the test. Enter your signature steak sandwich and compete against venues from across WA for the title of WA’s Best Steak Sandwich in one of two categories — Perth Metro or WA Regional.
Â
Your sandwich will have to win over diners, mystery judges and competition judges before the finalists face the ultimate test at the live cook-offs at Hospitality Expo.
Â
When nominations open we’ll add a “nominate here” button.
Love eating a great steak sandwich?
The competition is for you, too. From the classic pub steak sandwich to creative takes on a much-loved favourite, the competition is a chance to get out and discover some of WA’s most delicious sangas and test your steak sandwich fangability along the way.
Â
Once voting opens, head to a participating venue, order its nominated steak sandwich, give it a try and decide whether it deserves your vote. You’ll need to provide proof that you bought the sandwich when you vote, so there’s a good reason to do your research the delicious way.
Â
Public voting opens 1 February 2027 and closes 15 March 2027. We’ll add a “vote here” button here when it opens.
How the competition works
Step 1: Venues nominate
Venues nominate their steak sandwich when nominations open on 7 December 2026.
The nominated steak sandwich must meet the competition requirements (see below) and remain consistent throughout the competition.
Step 2: Diners get tasting
Between 1 February and 15 March 2027, the public can order and taste the nominated steak sandwiches and decide which ones deserve their vote. It’s a chance to discover a new local favourite, support your local pub, hotel, tavern or restaurant, and take part in the search for WA’s best.
Â
Customers will be asked to provide proof of purchase when submitting their vote. To be eligible, the proof of purchase must clearly show the steak sandwich and/or the venue name and date of purchase.
Â
When public voting opens we will provide a link here.
Step 3: Finalists determined
Finalists will be determined through the competition’s public voting and mystery judging process.
Step 4: Live cook-offs
The finalists will take their steak sandwiches from the menu to the competition kitchen for the final test.
The live cook-offs will be held at the 2027 AHA Hospitality Expo at Crown Perth on 4 and 5 May 2027.
Each finalist will cook and prepare their steak sandwich in front of hospitality industry peers, before dishing them up to the judging panel for a final taste test.
Competition requirements
Each nominated steak sandwich must:
Be available for purchase at the nominated venue during the competition period.
Feature beef or lamb as the main protein.
Remain consistent throughout the nomination, voting and live cook-off phases.
Meet all other competition requirements outlined in the terms and conditions.
Â
Any attempt to manipulate or falsify votes undermines the credibility of the competition and is unfair to venues that have participated honestly.
Anyone found to have done this may be disqualified from this year’s competition and future competitions.
What makes a winning steak sandwich?
Finalists will be judged on:
Tenderness of the beef or lamb
Composition and presentation
Originality and creativity
Quality of accompanying chips
Sauces and accompaniments
Overall flavour
Value for money
